GRAND BALL IN REVAL: Dance of the Empress Katarina

3 OKTOBER 2020

EXPLORE TALLINN, ALSO KNOWN AS REVAL IN SWEDISH

Katarina I of Russia, born April 15, 1684, died May 17, 1727, was her husband Peter I's co-regent from 1724 until his death the following year, and then became sole regent, the first woman on the Russian throne. Before marriage to Peter the Great, Katarina was married in Livland to a Swedish officer, Kruse. She was abducted by the Russians and after 1710 he probably ended up in Russian captivity after the fall of Reval. His further fate is unknown.

Kadriorg or the Katarinadalen in Swedish, is a part of city in the district of Kesklinn in Estonia's capital, Tallinn/Reval. The district has its name after the Katarinadalens Castle, which is located here. The valley has been named after the Russian Empress Katarina the first and not as many may think, the more famous Katarina the second or large.

Estonias capital is Tallinn, however in Swedish the name of the city is actually Reval. In essence, the correct way to name the city in Swedish is Reval. You can still see remains of the Swedish naming of the capital walking down the streets in the old town, many places are named Reval, like the Reval Bookstore or Reval Café.
